Mo Brooks, starting GOP first baseman in Congressional Baseball Game, ‘optimistic’ in victory

As starting first baseman for the Republicans, U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) seeks to once again lead the GOP to victory over Democrats in the annual Congressional Baseball Game.

The partisan matchup, held at Washington Nationals Park, will take place Thursday at 6:05 CST and will be broadcast live on both Fox Sports and C-Span.

The annual game brings Democrat and Republican members of Congress together on the diamond to see which party can claim bragging rights until the following year’s showdown. According to the congressman’s office, the game is expected to raise a minimum of $1.7 million for local Washington, D.C. charities.

Due in no small part to Brooks’ athletic abilities, the GOP narrowly edged out Democrats during last year’s game in a 13-12 thriller.

Showing no signs of fatigue throughout the intense contest, Brooks played first base for the entire game. The congressman saw two at-bats, notched two runs, and recorded no errors.

Showcasing his uncanny fielding talent, Brooks nabbed a bare-handed catch off an errant throw to get a Democrat batter out at first base. The sequence was recognized as the defensive play of the game.

In a statement, the six-term congressman conveyed his excitement over taking the field for the GOP.

“The Congressional Baseball Game is a great tradition that brings Republicans and Democrats together at the Washington Nationals stadium,” said Brooks in a release. “Tens of thousands of fans attended last year’s game. I can’t wait to participate in this great American pastime while my family and friends (including 4 children and 12 grandchildren) cheer us on.”

The North Alabama congressman, who at age 68 will be his team’s most veteran player, looks to replicate last year’s stellar performance and lead the GOP to victory in back-to-back years.

“I hope our four months of 6:00 AM morning practices (some in sleet and on icy fields) pay off,” expressed Brooks. “This year’s Republican team is the best since I’ve been in Congress. While I am sure the Democrats will do everything they can to beat the stew out of us, I’m optimistic we will keep the winner’s trophy on the GOP side of the House Floor.”
