The Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) today announced their endorsement of Dr. Chad Mathis for U.S. Congress in Alabama’s 6th District.

SCF was founded by former U.S. Senator and current Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint. They describe themselves as an “independent, grassroots organization that is dedicated to electing true conservative leaders to the U.S. Senate who have the courage to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Although Mathis is not running for the senate, SCF’s support of his candidacy is part of their “House Conservatives Project.”

“The goal of the project is to provide political support to outstanding leaders in Congress so they can advance conservative policies in the House and potentially run for the U.S. Senate in the future,” SCF explains on their website.

They released the following statement about Mathis’ candidacy this morning:

Dr. Chad Mathis (R-AL) is a small businessman and a specialist in orthopedic sports medicine. His background as a physician will make him a leading voice in the fight to repeal Obamacare and replace it with free market solutions.

Dr. Mathis decided to run for Congress because of the unsustainable growth of government, the detrimental impact of Obamacare, and his concern for the nation he was leaving his children.

Even though he’s from Alabama, Dr. Mathis saw that Ted Cruz (R-TX) had the vision to be a leader in the Senate so he went to Texas in 2012 to help his campaign. Dr. Mathis believes deeply in the principles of freedom that make America great, and he will make an excellent congressman.

SCF does not support incumbents, which has made them a lightning rod in Republican circles in recent years. Perhaps most notably, they have been one of the main backers of Matt Bevin’s challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky.

Dr. Mathis said Tuesday that SCF’s support of his candidacy is a strong indication of the type of congressman he will be if elected.

“The endorsement of Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) signifies my candidacy is the only one in this race proven to bring bold, new conservative leadership to Washington,” said Dr. Mathis. “SCF knows that I will fight to end the spending, ban the bailouts, end the earmarks, defend life, and most importantly repeal Obamacare. SCF has earned a reputation for supporting candidates who will fight for America’s greatness, even when it means standing up to their own party to do so. I am proud to have their endorsement, and that of thousands of grassroots members who recognize building a conservative majority in Washington, means changing the people we send there.”

Mathis today adds SCF to the list of conservative groups who have already endorsed his candidacy, including FreedomWorks PAC, Madison Project, Citizens United Political Victory Fund and RedState.
