Mark Sears named SEC player of the week after two huge performances

It has been an up-and-down season for Alabama Crimson Tide star guard Mark Sears in his return for the final year of eligibility. Sears, the Muscle Shoals native, found another gear on the offensive side of the ball this past week.

For his efforts, he was named the SEC Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Tennessee Volunteers star Chaz Lanier.

In Alabama’s two games last week, Sears scored a ridiculous 65 combined points with 35 in the loss to the Missouri Tigers and another 30 in the home victory over the weekend against the Kentucky Wildcats.

Sears winning the award makes for the fourth time in his three-year Alabama career he’s received the honor. The back-to-back scoring explosions also made Sears the first player in Division 1 this season with back-to-back 30-point games, an impressive feat considering the numerous stars across the country.

Moving forward, Sears is going to need to continue to be at the top of his game in order for Alabama to make a run both at a potential SEC Championship as well as a push for a good showing in the NCAA Tournament.

After leading the team to program’s first-ever Final Four appearance in school history last season, Sears returned to try to finish the job and win a national title. There’s still a ton of work to do in making that happen, but performances like this past week from Sears will go a long way.
