A Birmingham man pleaded guilty on Monday to murdering Birmingham Police Department Sgt. Wytasha Carter and attempting to murder two other officers during an encounter in January 2019.
The defendant, Jeremy Elwin Owens, will serve three life sentences in state prison and has no chance for parole.
Owens, 33, avoided the death penalty for his killing of Carter by entering a guilty plea.
Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr announced the plea deal in a release on Monday.
The two members of the Birmingham Police Department who were at the center of the attempted murder charges are officer Luke Allums, who Owens shot, and Sgt. Talana Brown, who Owens attempted to shoot.
Owens was arrested in February 2019.
“This plea agreement ends the criminal case,” stated Carr on Monday, continuing, “We want to continue to give our condolences to the Carter family as well as our commitment to honor the life of Sgt. Wytasha Carter as we continue to serve this community and fight for justice.”
“We thank the Birmingham Police Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for their hard work and dedication on the investigation and prosecution of these cases,” Carr concluded.
