Major League Fishing (MLF) is facing a wrongful death lawsuit following a deadly boating accident that killed three people during its April 16 tournament on Smith Lake.

The crash involved a Nitro bass boat, operated by tournament angler Flint Davis, and a center-console boat carrying Joey M. Broom of Altoona, John K. Clark of Cullman, and Jeffrey C. Little of Mississippi. All three men aboard the non-tournament boat died, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The family of Joey Broom filed the lawsuit in Cullman County, naming MLF, Davis, and guide boat captain Gary Holcomb as defendants. The suit claims negligence, alleging unsafe operating conditions during the event.

In response, MLF expressed condolences and denied wrongdoing, stating that it considers participant safety a top priority and is confident the legal process will confirm the organization’s position.

WAFF shared MLF’s full statement regarding the lawsuit.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred during our tournament on Smith Lake. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those impacted by this heartbreaking event,” the statement said. “Each day, and especially at our Major League Fishing events, our participants and their safety are our greatest priorities.”

“Unfortunately, we are defendants in a legal action related to this tragedy. We engaged in no wrongdoing in this accident, and are certain that the legal process will result in that conclusion. Out of respect for the individuals involved and their families, as well as the legal process, we cannot comment further at this time.”

The lawsuit will proceed in Cullman County as the legal system works to determine responsibility in the wake of the tragedy on Smith Lake.
