Inspired by the viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge of 2014, a social media trend is sweeping the internet—this time with a mission to raise awareness for mental health care access. Longleaf Recovery & Wellness is embracing the challenge not just for the laughs, but to highlight a serious cause: expanding support and visibility for mental health treatment in Alabama and beyond.
Leading the charge were Colin Harris, Chief Executive Officer, and John Giannetto, Chief Development Officer at Longleaf, who bravely took on the ice bucket challenge after being nominated by peers in the behavioral health community. Despite a last-minute scheduling change, the duo carried out the challenge with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose.

“We’re always looking for ways to let our staff shine and show how passionate we are about the work we do,” said Sophia Clarke, Director of Marketing at Longleaf, who helped coordinate and film the event. “This is more than just a chilly moment—it’s a powerful (and hilarious) way to raise awareness. We want people to know that healing is possible, and we’re here to help them get there.”
At its core, the challenge reflects Longleaf’s belief that “recovery is not one-size-fits-all.” With a personalized and evolving approach to care, the organization aims to meet people exactly where they are—emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
The facility draws inspiration from its namesake—the longleaf pine, which thrives after fire, symbolizing strength through adversity.
“You kind of have to burn yourself down to the ground to come back stronger,” Clarke added. “That’s what Longleaf stands for.”
