Lane Kiffin speaks out against 9-game SEC schedule: ‘Not a good idea’

New LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin has never been afraid to speak his mind, and that was the case once again when he was asked this week about the SEC adding an extra conference game to the schedule.

Kiffin pointed — as he has done before — to not every conference being created equal and the College Football Playoff selection committee not taking this enough into account while picking teams, among other reasons for not wanting to play an extra conference game.

“I’m not gonna complain about it, I was very outspoken in meetings with the commissioner, presidents, and athletic directors that in my opinion it was not a good idea until the system of how they selected teams was fixed,” Kiffin said, citing the need for things like automatic bids and strength of schedule being factored as it is in basketball for the NCAA Tournament.

“Until that was fixed it made zero sense to me to add another hard game, put teams on the road five times in this conference which top to bottom is the hardest conference to play in and the hardest stadiums…I don’t think that anybody now thinks that there is value in that and you’re gonna continue to have this threshold until they go to more teams or a different system that 10-2 is in and 9-3 is out, and you just got some more losses in your conference.”

Whether Kiffin is right remains to be seen, but it’s tough to argue that the SEC starting this year just made the road harder for its teams to make the CFP, and they did it without a whole lot of benefit.

It’s a decision that will be scrutinized for years to come, and it will be fascinating to see it play out.
