Key dates announced for Alabama House District 33 special election

The important dates for the special election to replace recently deceased State Rep. Ron Johnson (R-Sylacauga), who represented Alabama House District 33, were announced by Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday.

The deadline to qualify with the two major political parties is Tuesday, August 4.

The initial party primary will be held on October 6, and a primary runoff will be held, if needed, on November 3.

Alabama House District 33 is located in parts of Clay, Coosa and Talladega Counties. The largest population center is the town of Sylacauga.

The general election will occur on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

Rep. Johnson was the longest-tenured member of the Alabama House of Representatives, having been first elected in 1978.

“Rep. Ron Johnson served the constituents of Clay, Coosa and Talladega Counties well for many years, and I know he will truly be missed by all,” Ivey said in a statement on Tuesday.

Any independent or minor party candidates who wish to run in the general election against the nominees from the two major parties have until October 6 to file their information with the Alabama Secretary of State.

“Especially while we are experiencing such uncertain times, it is important that the people living in House District 33 have a voice for them in the Legislature. For that reason, I am calling a special election to fill this seat,” Ivey added on Tuesday.
