U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is calling on U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and the Democrats to stop trying to appease their leftist base and instead vote to open the government.
A majority of the Democrats in the Senate have voted thirteen times against a clean continuing resolution that would fund the government through November.
While Republicans currently have a majority in the Senate, they have been unable to overcome the 60 vote threshold to avoid a filibuster.
Britt discussed the continuing standoff Thursday on WVNN’s “The Dale Jackson Show.”
“It is clear that Schumer has lost his swagger,” Britt said. “He is absolutely terrified of his shadow, his shadow’s name is AOC, and every bit of this is to attempt to drive up political points with the left wing of their party, which, by the way, I would like to just point out I think the left wing now is the party. I think we’re seeing that from the New York mayoral race all the way to the behavior on Capitol Hill. No, he has absolutely lost touch with reality, and he continues to put the American people in the crosshairs.”
Republicans have criticized the Democrats for wanting expand subsides for Obamacare, which they argue means some of that money will pay for the healthcare of those who have entered the country illegally.
Britt also called out the mainstream media for giving cover to the Democrat leadership.
“Look, I got asked the other day why the American people don’t really know, aren’t being told what’s actually happening here. And I said it is because of the left wing media,” she explained. “It is because of the legacy media. They have refused up until this point to tell the actual story, and they don’t know what to do with themselves, because they know we’re actually right, and they have never put forth any type of talking points themselves until, like you said in the last few days, that have actually supported us in any way, shape or form. And so that’s what you’re seeing, though, because I know real people are getting hurt.”
The senator talked about the ramifications to Alabamians if the shutdown continues.
“There are real consequences… The money has run out, and now SNAP benefits, people will go without them,” she said. “I mean, that is families being hungry as a result of political grandstanding. It is unnecessary, and it is fundamentally un American, and Democrats just need to do the right thing.”
“They cannot sit there and brag to their base that they shut the government down and they’re standing up to Donald Trump and then come back on the other side and say, ‘Oh no, no, no, no, this is Republicans.’ It’s not Republicans,” she added. “We are the adults in the room, and they need to stop behaving like children and actually join the calls, and that’s for the American people.”
