U.S. Senator Katie Britt spoke from the Senate’s press briefing room Thursday morning alongside top leadership to introduce legislation designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism under certain humanitarian conditions.

It came after the Wednesday assassination of conservative political activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.

Britt spoke candidly on Kirk’s killing and addressed the media directly.

“Political violence has no place in America. What we saw yesterday — and everyone saw it — is sickening. It is disgusting. It was a political assassination, and all of you sitting in these rows have a duty and an obligation to call it that,” Britt (R-Montgomery) said.

Following Wednesday’s shooting in Utah, local, state, and federal authorities took two suspects into custody before ultimately deeming the shooter still at large.

According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, bullet casings engraved with “expressions of transgender and antifascist ideology” were found in a rifle discovered abandoned in a wooded area near the scene at Utah Valley University.

“You know, when I’m thinking about Charlie, obviously, his faith was the most important thing in his life. His wife, his children — our prayers are with them. But, he influenced countless Americans across the world, my kids being amongst those groups. Talking with them last night, talking through this with them last night, it’s just unthinkable that this is happening in the United States of America,” Britt said.

“The time for unity — the time for peace — it is now.”
