Katherine Robertson, chief counsel to the Alabama Attorney General and candidate for that office in 2026, isn’t showing much sympathy for a Muslim man who has been on death row for 35 years.

Charles Lee “Sonny” Burton is scheduled to be executed by nitrogen hypoxia during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan on March 12th.

Burton said he was hurt by the date set for his execution because he is a devout Muslim.

“I was sad and disappointed but I’d like to believe that she wasn’t aware that March 12 is during Ramadan,” he told Aldotcom. “I’d like to think she didn’t know because she’s a Christian woman.”

Robertson responded to the story on X, making the argument that there’s no legitimate reason to change the date.

“Mr. Burton’s case is 35 years old,” Robertson said, “thus, he has been allowed to live to observe 34 previous Ramadans before facing his punishment.”

Burton was one of six men convicted for the murder of Doug Battle, which occurred during a robbery at an AutoZone store in Talladega.

Burton was sentenced to death in 1991.

Some have argued that he should be resentenced because he was not the triggerman in the incident, and the person who actually fired the shot was later resentenced to life without parole.

“Governor Ivey reviews every case in which an execution has been ordered. In doing so, she carefully considers all findings, facts and circumstances,” a spokesperson for Gov. Kay Ivey said about the execution timing.
