Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Brad Mendheim is running for another term on the state’s highest judicial body.

In a statement released Wednesday morning, Mendheim formally announced his candidacy to retain Place 2 on the Alabama Supreme Court, a seat he has held since 2018 when he was first appointed by Governor Kay Ivey. He won a full term in 2020 by a landslide in the general election.

“Alabamians want a Supreme Court justice who shares their conservative values, Christian morals, and commonsense approach to interpreting the law,” Justice Mendheim said.

“Throughout my career, I have strictly followed the law as it is written, defended the fundamental rights, freedoms, and liberties that each of us are guaranteed by the U.S. and Alabama constitutions, and fought to preserve the conservative foundation upon which are judicial system is built.”

He recalls that his interest in practicing law began at a young age.

“I grew up in Dothan, Alabama where my dad worked as a pharmacist,” said Mendheim. “I cannot tell you exactly when, but I knew before I ever graduated high school that I wanted to be a lawyer, primarily because I was interested in public service and knew that, as a lawyer, I would be able to do that.”

Mendheim has held judicial offices spanning almost 25 years, including service as a circuit judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit, and as a district judge in Houston County from 2001-2008. Before becoming a judge, he served as an assistant district attorney in Henry and Houston counties.

A graduate of Auburn University with high honors, Mendheim finished his studies at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law in 1993.

The Alabama Republican Party primary election will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
