Johnson named DeKalb County EDA’s new executive director

The DeKalb County Economic Development Authority announced today that Dr. Brett Johnson has been appointed as its new executive director, marking a pivotal moment for the organization’s future.

Johnson, who will begin his role in November, joins DCEDA after serving as the mayor’s chief of staff in Gadsden.

“Brett brings a unique perspective to the table with his extensive experience,” said Dr. John Anderson, chairman of the DCEDA board. “He will be an asset to DeKalb County, and we can’t wait to see what all he can accomplish with the support of our excellent staff, industry, and local communities.

“We expect to see continued growth, exciting new announcements, and so much more ahead,” he added.

Johnson succeeds Jimmy Durham, who led the organization for 30 years and played an instrumental role in shaping the economic landscape of DeKalb County. Durham’s legacy has established a solid foundation for future growth, making Johnson’s arrival timely and significant for the county’s ongoing development.

In his previous roles, Johnson has demonstrated leadership in economic development, education, and public service. Prior to his role at the City of Gadsden, Johnson held leadership positions at the Alabama Higher Education Partnership, the Alabama Education Association, and Liberty Learning Foundation, bringing with him a track record of fostering community partnerships and delivering results.

“I am ready to deliver for DeKalb County,” Johnson said. “We have tremendous assets to promote and are blessed to be in one of the most resourceful areas in the country. I’m looking forward to working with our industry partners to expand on what has gotten us to this point while also reaching for new heights through strategic innovation.

“That innovative spirit and determination is what made DeKalb County and it’s what will carry us into the future.”

Throughout his tenure in Gadsden, Johnson spearheaded major initiatives, including serving as the mayor’s liaison for the Gadsden-Etowah Industrial Development Authority, overseeing federal relations, and leading the city’s grant-writing and marketing efforts.

His expertise in these areas is expected to have an immediate impact as DeKalb County focuses on attracting new industries and fostering business expansions.

A personal connection to DeKalb County also played a role in Johnson’s decision to join DCEDA. His wife, Tiffany Gorham Johnson, is a Fort Payne native and graduate of Fort Payne High School. Currently a Local Reading Specialist for the Etowah County Board of Education, Mrs. Johnson has been an educator for more than a decade, further solidifying the couple’s ties to the region.
