Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl sent an email to ALGOP State Executive Committee (SEC) members on Tuesday afternoon with the strongest public indication yet that he is preparing to announce a campaign for Lt. Governor of Alabama in 2026.

Addressed to fellow SEC members, Wahl says he is grateful and proud of their work, and what they are accomplishing together as a party.

“I wanted to reach out personally to let you know that I am seriously considering a run for Lieutenant Governor. This is not a decision I take lightly, and I am praying for wisdom and guidance. I believe that now more than ever, we need bold, conservative elected officials who are willing to stand for our platform and push back against lukewarm policies and the radical left-wing media. That is the kind of leadership I strive to provide,” Wahl wrote.

“This is a difficult and bittersweet decision for me. I am excited about the prospect of furthering the Party’s values by running for Lieutenant Governor, but it does mean that I would plan to step down as Party Chairman. While I hope to stay involved with the State Party in some capacity, the bylaws are not entirely clear on whether a chairman taking a leave of absence would satisfy the requirements outlined in our standing rules.”

Wahl, just in his late thirties, has built a conservative political resume that would rival those twice his age. In roles ranging from communications director for Roy Moore’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign, and field director for the state party in 2012, and later as senior vice chairman of the party, Wahl blazed a trail to his election as the youngest state GOP party chairman in U.S. history in 2021.

Now, Wahl is signaling his eagerness to run for statewide constitutional office in 2026.

“I’ve received a great deal of encouragement to run, but before making any final decision, I want to include you in this process. I deeply value the friendship, support, and wisdom of each SEC member. Your thoughts and prayers mean a great deal to me, and I would be truly grateful for your input and support as I consider this next step,” Wahl wrote on Tuesday.

According to reports, if Wahl officially launches a campaign for Lieutenant Governor, the most likely scenario under ALGOP’s bylaws is that he would need to resign or formally step aside from the Chairmanship, rather than simply take a leave of absence.
