Jimbo Fisher says he is ‘very interested’ in potential return to coaching

A familiar face could be looking to return to the sidelines.

The Texas A&M Aggies have recruited at a high level over the last calendar year and shown steps of improvement after disposing of Jimbo Fisher and hiring Mike Elko — but the former wants another shot.

During a recent interview on Trials and Triumph with Freddie Stevenson, Fisher spoke about his former gig and revealed that while he has enjoyed the extra time with his family, he wants to get back into coaching if there was a good fit to come along and want to hire him.

“I’ve enjoyed my time with my family, but I always tried to include my family,” Fisher said. “Remember, I took the kids, and we always had them at practices and they were, like, part of the team. They were in the locker rooms and all that. But to answer your question, if the right situation comes along and it’s right, I’m still 59. I’m still in great shape, I’m healthy, have had success everywhere we’ve ever been. We know at the end at A&M, it’s unfortunate, but we also had the highest-ranked team they ever had there in 2020. … The way the game is, yes, I still do because I still love it.

“I never thought of it as a job. I loved it. And I think to be able to do it, I would. I’ve been fortunate, I’ve on 72% of my games, won 80% of my playoff games and been fortunate to win a national championship as a head coach, as an assistant. I miss the relationships with the players. But to ask you that, yeah, I would be very interested in still doing it because I think I’ve still got a lot to give and I’d like to get back out there. I really would.”

Upon the firing, Fisher received an absolutely massive record $76 million buyout and is still making $7.2 million annually through the 2031 season.

With a guaranteed paycheck like that, it makes it a whole lot easier to sit home to spend time with those you love rather than getting back on the sidelines.

Football coaches are not the same as regular people though, and while Fisher may have enjoyed his year and a half-long vacation, eventually that nagging feeling is going to set in and the burning desire to coach will pop up.

It won’t be this season, but Fisher is absolutely a name worth keeping a close eye on in the next coach hiring cycle.
