Jared Hudson: Alabama’s farmers deserve a fighter, not another politician

(Jared Hudson for U.S. Senate/Contributed, YHN)

I’ve spent my adult life in service, first as a U.S. Navy SEAL, then as a law enforcement officer, a small business owner, and as the founder and CEO of Covenant Rescue Group, an organization that combats human trafficking.

Each of those roles taught me what it means to fight for others, to take responsibility when the stakes are high, and to lead when it would be easier to stand aside. I want to continue my service to be a voice in Washington for our farmers, our law enforcement, our veterans, and the people of this great state.

That commitment to service is personal for me because it’s rooted in where I come from.

Growing up in rural Etowah County, I was surrounded by farming. My grandfather and uncle still work their land there, and some of my earliest memories are of helping them however I could. I wasn’t much of a hand, but I learned to drive a tractor, plant, shuck, string, and sell what we grew.

Those long days taught me two things: farming is among the hardest work a person can do, and it carries a weight unlike any other, the responsibility of putting food on another family’s table.

That’s why agriculture isn’t an abstract issue for me. It’s family. It’s a community. And it’s Alabama’s heartbeat.

As a SEAL and now as a law enforcement officer, I learned that when the mission matters, you fight for the folks standing beside you.

Our farmers deserve that same commitment. They don’t need another politician making promises in the middle of campaign season and forgetting them after Election Day.

And they sure don’t need someone bankrolled by trial lawyers who’ve never set foot in a chicken house or ridden a combine. What Alabama farmers need is a warrior in Washington who will show up, stand firm, and fight for them every single day.

We’ve been fortunate to have Coach Tuberville standing in the gap for Alabama’s farmers.

He’s taken the heat and fought battles while others duck, and our producers are better for it.

If I’m elected, I’ll carry that mission forward on the Senate Agriculture Committee, making sure the voices of Alabama’s farmers and rural communities are heard loud and clear in Washington, no matter how noisy the swamp gets.

Too often, Washington gets in the way of the very people who are just trying to feed this country.

Instead of clearing a path, it piles on paperwork, delays, and rules written by folks who’ve never set foot on a farm. Farmers don’t need another stack of regulations or programs that look good on paper but fall flat in the real world. What they need is freedom to do what they do best: produce food, raise livestock, and keep rural communities alive, without Washington second-guessing them at every turn.

Another thing I hear from farmers all across Alabama is the need for Congress to do its job and pass a strong farm bill, and to pass it on time. For too long, Washington has kicked the can with short-term extensions that leave producers guessing about the future. Farming is hard enough without that kind of uncertainty.

A good farm bill provides stability, gives farmers the tools to manage risk, and ensures rural communities have the support they need to keep producing the food and fiber that feed and clothe America.

The truth is, Alabama is already an agricultural powerhouse.

Poultry alone makes up nearly three-quarters of the state’s farm production. Add in peanuts, row crops, cattle, catfish, and timber, and you see the strength of our land and our people. With the right support, we can keep that strength growing and keep our rural communities thriving for the next generation.

I won’t pretend to know every challenge a farmer faces. But I do know this: the Lord gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. I’ll do more listening than talking, and I’ll keep the door open to the people who live this work every day.

Alabama’s farmers have carried this state for generations.

Now I’m asking you to let me carry that fight for you in Washington, not as another politician, but as your warrior for Alabama agriculture.
