James Spann shares an icy moment with  Longleaf Recovery & Wellness Director Paul Bryant Jr.

An eye-opening moment with a powerful message unfolded this week at Longleaf Recovery & Wellness of Birmingham, when meteorologist James Spann and program director Paul Bryant Jr. participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for mental health.

In a video shared on Longleaf’s Facebook page, which has drawn over 1,000 views and dozens of reactions, Spann used the moment to highlight the importance of expanding mental health care across Alabama.

“Every single family in the state of Alabama is touched in some way, shape, or form by mental health issues. Every family,” Spann said. “And we all have to be better.”

Bryant Jr., seated beside him, underscored the widespread impact of mental illness, citing national statistics showing that one in two Americans will experience a mental health condition at some point, and about one in four in any given year.

“The mental health crisis in America is real,” he said. “And we’re doing our part at Longleaf to meet that need.”

Longleaf is using the Ice Bucket Challenge — originally created to support ALS research — as a platform to call attention to mental health awareness. Spann praised the work being done at Longleaf, calling it a much-needed program for the state.

Before they were doused with icy water, both men nominated others to carry on the effort. Bryant tapped the Honorable Judge Maria Fortune, while Spann challenged Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin.

“Mayor, you’re next,” Spann said with a smile.

Longleaf Recovery & Wellness operates programs across Alabama, providing treatment and support for individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges. The organization has made advocacy and education a key part of its mission.
