Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has ordered all flags on public grounds to be flown at half staff on Monday in honor of Moody Police Department Lt. Stephen Williams, who was killed in the line of duty Tuesday night at a Super 8 Motel.
Williams’ funeral is being held on Monday at Moody First Baptist Church. A visitation was held on Sunday night in Pelham.
“Let us remember the life and service of Sgt. Williams, whose sacrifice will never be forgotten. He proudly served his community as a police officer for 23 years, the last three of those at the Moody Police Department,” remarked Ivey in a statement accompanying the directive to lower all flags.
Williams died while carrying the rank of sergeant, but Moody Police Chief Thomas Hunt posthumously promoted him to lieutenant on Friday.
At a press conference Friday, St. Clair County District Attorney Lyle Harmon said that the investigation into Williams’ death was still ongoing even after he felt there was enough evidence to charge two suspects with capital murder in the case.
According to the Trussville Tribune, Williams received the Chiefs Award of Excellence last holiday season for his work done in 2019.
Williams was 50 years old the day he died. He is survived by his wife and three children.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help his family, which has currently raised $52,000 of its $75,000 goal.
“Please join me in praying for his wife & children, his fellow officers & his community,” concluded Ivey.
