Isn’t that Especial? Modelo dethrones Bud Light

It appears that there’s a new beermeister in the U.S.A.

Bud Light, an established and well known American beer, has been beaten out of the first place spot for highest sales in the country for the first time in years by Modelo Especial, a beer native to Mexico.

Bud Light reigned supreme over a market for decades. However, the beer’s value plummeted in early April after a partnership between the company and trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney was announced. As part of the partnership Bud Light released cans with the trans influencer on them with the words, “Cheers to 365 days of being a Woman.”

Since the backlash, Bud Light has been losing massive numbers of customers throughout the country. These one-time customers are now buying other brands such as Modelo Especial.

In an effort to win some of its lost customers back Bud Light released a new commercial. Reviews have been mixed.

For four weeks that ended in the beginning of June, Modelo earned 8.4% of U.S. retail beer sales, with Bud Light falling to second place with 7.3%. Dollar sales were just as bad for Bud Light during that period, with sales falling 24.4%, while Modelo’s rose to 12.2%.

Net sales for Constellation Brands, the owner of Modelo Especial, have risen by more than 6% recently reaching approximately $2.52 billion.
