Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore is a controversial figure, no doubt. Those on the left hate him, some on the right love him, and most Alabama voters just want him to go away. But like a recurring rash, Alabama Republicans cannot shake the non-stop Roy Moore news.
Recently Moore announced he was suing his accusers and others for a political conspiracy. At that press conference he appeared to also call his political career over, but Roy Moore and the liberal media weren’t having any of that:
“To clarify, as I said in my response, I have no plans at this time to run for office. Nevertheless, plans change. If the opportunity arises to make a difference, I will have no reluctance to again run for political office, including that of Governor.”
Why this matters: Roy Moore is a terrible candidate. Democrats want him on the ballot so they can use him against other Republicans. They know there is no Senator Doug Jones if Moore is beaten in the primary. The media needs a villain and Moore is a great one. Roy Moore wants to be on the ballot so he can continue being in the public eye. If Moore believes the things he claims to believe, if Moore wants his stated positions to be public policy, the best thing he could do is get up on his stupid horse and ride in to the sunset.
The details:
— Moore’s races for offices other than judicial seats, which he won in both Etowah County and statewide, have been complete disasters.
— Then Governor Bob Riley waxed Moore in 2006 by a 2-to-1 margin.
— In 2010, Moore came in 4th place in a crowded Republican primary field in a race won by eventual Governor Robert Bentley.
— Moore’s defeat at the hands of now-Senator Doug Jones was especially embarrassing and Moore’s 2017 candidacy only attracted roughly 50 percent of Donald Trump’s 2016 total in Alabama. Doug Jones captured 90 percent of Hillary Clinton’s amount.
