Huntsville leading Alabama large cities in growth per year according to Census data

The Rocket City continues to be by far the fastest growing major city in the state, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

In fact, of the four major cities in the state (Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile), Huntsville is the only one that is continually growing, having added roughly 10 people per day during the last year (3,534 people this year).

The total Huntsville population after a year is now 225,564 people.

Birmingham lost 246 residents throughout the year, bringing its population to 196,644 people.

Meanwhile, Montgomery lost nearly seven times as many as Birmingham with 1,650 departures, leaving its population at 195,287.

From 2022-23, Mobile lost 695 people but added nearly 20,000 people through annexation and bringing it to the second most-populated city at around 205,000.

Tuscaloosa, the fifth most-populated city in the state, is also growing. The home of the University of Alabama added 760 people and has more than 111,000, according to the Census. Across the state, Auburn added nearly 2,000 people and is at 82,000 for No. 7 in the state.
