Huntsville City Councilman arrested for theft

Devyn Keith, a Huntsville City Councilman, was arrested and charged with shoplifting Thursday.

Madison County jail records show that Keith, 34, was booked just after 3 p.m. on fourth degree theft of property.

The event happened at a Walmart on University Drive in Huntsville close to 1 p.m. today. Arresting officers were already at the location for reasons that were unrelated to Keith.

While at the scene the police were made aware of a possible shoplifter. They then confronted Keith and he was arrested without incident.

The City of Huntsville released a statement regarding the arrest.

“The City of Huntsville is aware of the situation. Huntsville Police are handling this case in accordance with standard practices and procedures.”

Fourth degree theft of property charges occur when an individual steals property that amounts to $500 or less. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor.

Sources familiar with the event told Yellowhammer News that after being processed and based on the minimal severity of the charges, Keith was kept in a holding area before making bail.
