House settlement leader tells Saban and Trump to stay out of NIL dispute

Last week, news broke that President Donald Trump is considering an executive order to help end the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) chaos now saturating college football. What exactly that executive order could look like or if it’s coming at all is currently not known. However, even with the ongoing uncertainty, some legal experts are already expressing opposition to a presidential decree and are requesting that both Trump and former Crimson Tide Head Coach Nick Saban stay out of the situation and proceedings.

“Coach Saban and Trump’s eleventh-hour talks of executive orders and other meddling are just more unneeded self-involvement,” said Steve Berman, an attorney working on a House settlement that would designate players as professionals. “College athletes are spearheading historic changes and benefitting massively from NIL deals. They don’t need this unmerited interference from a coach only seeking to protect the system that made him tens of millions.”

Berman continued to criticize Saban as hypocritical and further accused him of speaking out against a system that had benefited the former head coach financially.

If Saban has not made it clear by now, he is acting in the best interest of the sport and, in turn, the student athletes. Berman, however, is likely benefiting immensely from the current state of chaos and nonstop litigation. An executive order may or may not be the best way forward, but accusing Saban of ill intent when he is trying to help the sport is downright foolish.
