Drivers traveling on U.S. 231 near Alabama 174 north of Pell City are once again facing an added danger – a sinkhole.

For the third time in less than a month, the sinkhole has reopened, posing potential hazards for unsuspecting motorists. The issue has resulted in the road being closed or partially closed at different times as crews work to address the problem.

In late July, a sinkhole opened on U.S. Highway 231 just north of Alabama Highway 174, prompting the closure of the road early Sunday morning. The highway had been shut down until it could be filled in.

The closure was lifted by July 29, when it was reported that the highway had reopened after the repair.

But in early August, repairs were made again to the site, but the sinkhole reopened shortly afterward.

Then again on Thursday, the sinkhole appeared for the third time and reopened once more.

Neighbors told WBRC they are concerned for their safety and frustrated that the problem was not resolved the first time. Some said the recurring hazard could eventually cause a serious accident if not fixed properly and urged officials to take stronger measures to ensure driver safety.

WVTM 13 reported that the Alabama Department of Transportation said it is aware that the sinkhole on U.S. 231 near Alabama 174 north of Pell City continues to settle, which was expected after the original and temporary repairs and that they are investigating the situation further prepared to do additional work as needed.

ALDOT explained that sinkholes are not unusual in Alabama stating, “Sinkholes are relatively common in Alabama because underground limestone deposits can dissolve over time and create voids.”
