Governor Ivey sets special election dates for State Senate District 5

Governor Kay Ivey has issued a proclamation setting the dates for a special election to fill the newly vacant Senate District 5 seat. The position was formerly held by Senate Pro Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) who has stepped down to become Ivey’s Senior Advisor to Workforce Transformation.

“Senator Reed has been an outstanding partner as president pro tem of the Senate and will continue to be an integral leader in the state of Alabama, but he has left big shoes to fill in the state legislature,” said Ivey. “Greg has effectively represented his district and I encourage the folks in Senate District Five to get out and vote during this special election.”

The special primary elections are scheduled for March 11, 2025.  The special primary runoff, if necessary, is set for April 8, 2025, and the special general election will be held on June 24, 2025.

The deadline for qualifying with major political parties will be next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. The deadline for all independent candidates and/or minor parties is March 11, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

Senate District 5 includes portions of Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Tuscaloosa, and Walker Counties.

So far, only one has announced their candidacy for the office. State Rep. Matt Woods (R-Jasper) officially entered the race in November.

“It’s important that our area continues to have conservative representation in Montgomery,” said Woods.  “As a small business owner, I understand the needs of our communities and the challenges facing our state. Over the past two years, I’ve worked to reduce taxes, grow our economy, and protect our families. I will take that same conservative, pro-family, pro-business approach to work for the people of District 5.”

According to his last available FCPA report on the Alabama Secretary of State’s website, Woods has over $45,000 in his campaign account. Reed’s new role becomes official on Wednesday.
