August 9 was a milestone day for Irondale and the State of Alabama as the Golden Rule Bar-B-Q and Grill made history. Crowds filled the parking lot and packed the dining room, eager to support the beloved 134-year-old restaurant in its Guinness World Record attempt for the most pulled pork sandwiches sold in eight hours.
The event wasn’t just about food — it was a celebration. Governor Kay Ivey and Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. officially proclaimed August 9 as Golden Rule BBQ & Grill Day, recognizing the restaurant as one of Alabama’s oldest continuously operating eateries, founded in 1891. The celebration featured live music, family-friendly activities, giveaways, and 95¢ sandwiches, with a limit of 10 per customer.

When the Guinness World Records representative confirmed the achievement, confetti flew and cheers erupted. The previous record stood at 4,775 sandwiches, but Golden Rule smashed it by serving up 6,215 — a nearly 30% jump.
For their record-breaking performance, Guinness presented the managers with a framed certificate, which they plan to proudly display as a lasting reminder of the team’s hard work and the community’s enthusiastic support.
