The Auburn Tigers fell to the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Saturday afternoon in a game that was closer than many had anticipated. While the final score of 31-13 may seem like a dominant victory for Georgia, it doesn’t necessarily tell the full story of the game.
In the first half of the matchup, it was a low-scoring affair.
Auburn trailed 14-3 at the end of the half and had a long field goal attempt blocked that would have made it a one-possession game.
The Tigers trailed in total yardage 193-147, but the two teams were almost even in rushing. After they forced a three-and-out on Georgia’s first possession of the second half, Auburn’s Jarquez Hunter took it 38 yards for a touchdown to pull the score to 14-10.

From there, Georgia ran the ball right down the field making the score 21-10. In what was the “play of the game” on the ensuing possession, Payton Thorne was taken down for a loss on 4th and 1, setting Georgia up with great field position where they essentially put the game away with another touchdown to take a 28-10 lead in the fourth quarter.
Both teams scored field goals in the final ten minutes and Georgia made another fourth down stop late while Auburn was already down three possessions to end the game.
For Auburn, the result has to be a somewhat encouraging sign despite dropping to 2-4. Georgia only out-gained them 381-337. The Bulldogs threw for 240 yards compared to Auburn’s 200.
The Tigers now have a bye week before they head to Missouri on October 19.
