Fultondale City Council calls for mayor’s resignation; Mayor declines to step down

The Fultondale City Council voted unanimously last w to approve a formal resolution calling for the immediate resignation of Mayor Larry Holcomb. Despite the resolution and recent ethics findings, the first-term Mayor publicly declined to resign from office.

According to WBMA, the Council’s decision was prompted by findings from the Alabama Ethics Commission, which determined on April 2, 2025, that Holcomb had violated state ethics laws in his roles as Mayor of Fultondale and Superintendent of the Fultondale Gas Board. A second action from the commission on June 4 ordered Holcomb to pay both a penalty to the Alabama Ethics Commission and restitution to the City of Fultondale.

Mayor Holcomb responded to the resolution during the council meeting, firmly rejecting the request.

“I say nay. And to respond to that request, my answer is no, I will not step down,” Holcomb said. “And to inform everybody what that situation was, I was charged; Councilman Bryant went to the ethics and filed four different charges against me for violating: driving a city vehicle to do business for the Gas Board.”

“Three of them were found. They dismissed three of them. The fourth one that was not dismissed. When I got back from the meeting that I attended as the superintendent, I immediately paid the money back to the gas department that I had charged the gas onto. After I realized that it was not ethical. I immediately paid that money back to the gas department for the gas charges that was put on the charge card. There was no money charged to the city. And the ethics guy told me that me paying that money back showed that I was guilt. And that’s the only way they found me guilty of that. So I declined on stepping down like they asked me to.”
