Alabama lawmakers are leading the way among state legislatures across the country on how to address the issue of illegal immigration.
Members of both the State Senate and the House of Representatives are currently advancing a package of legislation designed to curb illegal immigration on the state level as the Trump administration executes a whole-of-government approach.
In a report detailing the effort from Alabama’s elected officials, particularly in the House, Fox News highlighted House lawmakers’ work on the issue.

Numerous bills working there way through the process this session were highlighted.
“As federal officials renew their focus on strict enforcement of immigration laws and deportations, Alabama lawmakers are advancing their own sweeping changes to the legal landscape,” Fox reports. “Enhanced penalties for illegal immigrants who commit crimes against minors would become law under a bill from state State Rep. Chip Brown [R-Hollinger’s Island]”
One bill, HB 297, would make it far more difficult for an illegal alien to transfer money to their country of origin.
“Across the bay in Baldwin County, GOP state Rep. Jennifer Fidler introduced another bill that keys into efforts made in other states, like Pennsylvania, where lawmakers have attempted to levy wire-transfer remittances for migrants and illegal immigrants to their home countries.”

Another piece of legislation, HB 7, would simplify the holding and transfer of illegal aliens while also vesting the state attorney general with more power to ensure organizations follow immigration law.
“A bill from state Rep. Ernie Yarbrough, R-Moulton, would allow state and county police the ability to hold and transfer illegal immigrants to federal authorities,” the report continued. “It also green-lights Attorney General Steve Marshall to report on agencies that do not comply with the new law and directs timely adherence to federal ICE detainer requests.”
The final bill analyzed in the article from FOX deals with high school athletics.
Another bill in the state House will reportedly target how the migrant crisis could affect public school athletic classifications. HB 298 was introduced by Rep. Brock Colvin, R-Albertville. The lawmaker has announced a plan to “exclude certain English Language Learner students from calculations of athletic classifications, as a ‘significant influx of immigrants’ muddy the waters and require ‘clear regulations and a level playing field.”
The report concluded by recognizing the hard work from the Alabama Senate on the issue, with the body having also introduced and passed several anti-illegal immigration bills.
“While President Trump has made great progress in securing the Southern Border, it’s also important that we take action to secure Alabama’s borders,” Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter said today.
