Former New York Yankees and Texas Rangers star first baseman Mark Teixeira is the latest figure to make the jump from sports into politics.
Teixeira won the GOP primary in Texas’ 21st Congressional district, beating out Jason Cahill and James Trainor to be the republican candidate for the seat being departed by incumbent Chip Roy, who is running for Texas Attorney General. He commanded more than 60% of the vote with close to 60,000 total, while neither Cahill nor Trainor reached 10%.
When the general election arrives in December, Teixeira will be pitted up against Democrat challenger Kristin Hook, as well as independent Dan McQueen.
Originally from the state of Maryland, Teixeira attended Georgia Tech before being drafted by the Rangers with the fifth overall selection in the 2001 MLB draft. He spent five seasons with Texas before being traded to the Atlanta Braves and eventually signed with the Yankees as a free agent on a huge contract ahead of the 2009 season.
He spent the remainder of his career in New York after helping the Yankees to win their most recent World Series title in his first season with the team. He eventually retired following the 2016 season.
With over 400 home runs and nearly 1,300 RBI throughout his career, he was one of the better players of his era. Now, he attempts to make a run for Congress and likely has a very strong chance of winning the seat.
