Displaced by Hurricane Katrina, former Alabama running back Eddie Lacy made a promise to his family.
His family survived the storm, but lost everything and had to move into a single-wide trailer outside of Baton Rouge. When Lacy was drafted in the second round by the Green Bay Packers, he promised to build them a new house.
“I really didn’t care what the house was like, where the house was located,” Lacy said in an ESPN feature. “I just knew the trailer had to go.”
The house has three columns out front, a mantlepiece in the living room for Lacy’s trophies, and a master bedroom the size of their former trailer, according to Lacy’s mother.
“For him to be able to provide us with the home, all I could do was just cry and thank God,” his mom said.
“The football stuff — all that’s cool,” Lacy added, “but being able to buy your parents a house is the best memory.”
Midway through his second NFL season, Lacy has 478 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns, with 277 yards receiving and one touchdown catch. Lacy’s Green Bay Packers are currently 6-3 and are one game behind the Detroit Lions in the NFC North.
While he now plays in the snow, far away from home, he can always come back to the place he built for his family.
