The campaign of U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) on Sunday sent out a fundraising email for five of his colleagues, including a vice chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
Jones’ email was a joint fundraising pitch that said contributions would be split evenly six ways between each Democratic candidate, including his own reelection bid.
The colleagues benefiting from his email were U.S. Senators Gary Peters of Michigan, Tina Smith of Minnesota, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Mark Warner of Virginia and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.
Warner, along with U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, serves as vice chair of the chamber’s Democratic Caucus. Schumer serves as the chair.
Senate Democratic leadership and their allies, including an aligned dark money network that recently began running ads to benefit Jones’ campaign, are currently working to flip the Senate. Achieving that goal would mean U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) losing the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, which would be a huge blow to the Yellowhammer State.
“Now more than ever, it’s clear we need better leadership in the Senate,” Jones’ campaign wrote in the Sunday fundraising email.
While fundraising for only Democrats, the campaign also claimed, “This is an opportunity to rally together against partisanship.”
In addition to Warner playing a leading role in the caucus, Smith is one of a handful of senators assigned to “Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis.” Meanwhile, Shaheen is vice chair of the caucus’ “Steering and Outreach Committee.”
Booker was formerly a presidential candidate during this primary cycle, before switching his focus to senatorial reelection. He is known, among other controversial policy positions, for being a leading supporter of the Green New Deal, along with U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
