Discover Rainsville: A hometown gem in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains

Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Rainsville is a small town with a big heart. Located along Highway 35 in DeKalb County, this growing community offers travelers a charming mix of history, hospitality, and family-friendly attractions—all while holding onto the values that make small-town Alabama special.

Incorporated in 1956, Rainsville’s roots date back to its earlier identity as Parker Town, named for the many Parker families who originally settled the area. The town’s eventual namesake, Will Rains, established the first general store that became a local gathering spot, laying the foundation for the thriving community that would follow. Today, Rainsville is home to more than 5,500 residents and continues to grow steadily each decade.

Rainsville also holds a place of distinction in Alabama’s leadership. It is the hometown of Nathaniel Ledbetter, the current Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives. His presence adds a notable civic legacy to the community’s profile.

Visitors quickly discover that Rainsville is more than just a stop on the map—it’s a destination rich with local pride. The city was recently recognized by SafeWise as the No. 1 Safest City in Alabama for 2025. Crime rates in both violent and property categories have dropped significantly in recent years, reflecting the town’s strong sense of community and effective public safety efforts.

Rainsville also holds a place in the state’s weather history. On April 27, 2011, the town was struck by an EF5 tornado during the historic Super Outbreak. The storm devastated homes, schools, and businesses, including millions of dollars in damage to Plainview High School. Despite the tragedy, residents came together to rebuild, and a memorial at the DeKalb County Coliseum now honors those lost in the storm.

Today, Rainsville welcomes guests with numerous attractions and events. The Rainsville Freedom Run, held each June, draws over 1,000 participants for its 10K and 5K races and has earned the title of “The Best Small Race in America.” The accompanying Freedom Festival is a favorite summer tradition, offering live music, food vendors, kids’ activities, and a fireworks show that lights up the mountain sky.

Families and sports enthusiasts will enjoy the newly renovated Field of Dreams Sports Complex, featuring turf fields and overhead netting for added safety. The complex hosts tournaments throughout the summer and is also home to a professionally designed disc golf course that attracts players from across the Southeastern United States.

Whether you’re passing through or looking for a “forever home,”  Rainsville offers a warm welcome and plenty to explore. From its scenic setting and safe streets to its strong sense of history and vibrant community events, Rainsville truly is a hometown worth discovering.
