Decatur to house statewide AI accelerator supporting Alabama entrepreneurs

Alabama entrepreneurs looking to build a business around artificial intelligence — or use it to get a business off the ground — could soon have a new place to turn for help.

The E-Center and Innovate Alabama are partnering to establish the Alabama AI Accelerator in Decatur. Organizers describe it as Alabama’s first statewide AI accelerator, with plans to support both promising AI companies and residents who want to start and grow businesses using the technology.

That two-part approach is central to the project. The accelerator will help AI-focused companies grow while providing other entrepreneurs with training, mentoring, technology resources and business support.

“Most AI initiatives focus either on supporting companies or educating people about the technology,” said John Joseph IV, executive director of the E-Center. “The Alabama AI Accelerator is designed to do both. We’re creating a pathway that helps grow promising AI companies in Alabama while also giving entrepreneurs across the state the tools and support needed to build businesses of their own.”

The program’s reach is intended to extend beyond Decatur and North Alabama. Plans call for connecting entrepreneurs across the state with resources to help turn their ideas into businesses that can grow.

State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) said the investment can help expand opportunities beyond Alabama’s larger cities.

“We need Innovate Alabama to sponsor and foster initiatives that will pay long-term dividends across the state. Innovation isn’t limited to the larger metro areas but can succeed most anywhere through the versatility of technology,” Orr said. “By investing in the Alabama AI Accelerator located in Decatur, Innovate Alabama is pushing opportunity across the state and what more could one ask?”

The partnership brings together state and local leaders, economic development organizations, entrepreneurs and community stakeholders. Its goals include helping residents start businesses, strengthening existing companies and preparing business owners to adapt as AI technology changes.

“Artificial intelligence is reshaping industries around the world, and Alabama has an opportunity to help entrepreneurs and businesses lead in that transformation,” said Cynthia Crutchfield, CEO of Innovate Alabama. “By supporting the Alabama AI Accelerator, we’re investing in a statewide resource that will help founders access emerging technology, strengthen Alabama’s innovation ecosystem and create new pathways for economic growth.”

For Decatur, the accelerator will add a new effort to support entrepreneurship through the E-Center, formally known as the Decatur-Morgan County Entrepreneurial Center. The business incubator provides coaching, counseling, mentoring, educational programs and workspace to emerging and established businesses.

“Decatur’s history reflects the vision and determination of those who saw potential and acted on it,” Mayor Kent Lawrence said. “From the industries that built our city to the entrepreneurs shaping its future, Decatur has always embraced progress. The Alabama AI Accelerator offers us a new opportunity to lead with purpose, transform innovation into practical results, and help prepare Alabama for what lies ahead. We are proud to welcome this statewide initiative to Decatur.”

Innovate Alabama is a statewide public-private partnership focused on entrepreneurship, technology and innovation. It was established to carry out recommendations from the Alabama Innovation Commission.

The next steps include a nationwide search for a site director to lead the accelerator and help develop its statewide programming and entrepreneurial strategy. The partners will also select a permanent location in Decatur.

An opening date and details on how entrepreneurs can participate have not been announced.
