As the search for Alabama’s new head coach rages on, a mainstay prospect to replace Nick Saban has become Washington’s Kalen DeBoer. This comes one day after Oregon’s Dan Lanning seemingly took himself out of the race.
In a new development, DeBoer, who was scheduled for a Friday morning appearance on local radio for Seattle’s 93.3 KJR, will not make said appearance, per an announcement from the station:
#Husky fans, we know you were looking forward to a visit with Coach DeBoer this morning.
Please understand that Coach DeBoer & UW Athletics are continuing to work towards a future we can all be excited about.
At this time, Coach will not be joining us this morning, but we will… pic.twitter.com/QlyhX5JZHp— 93.3 KJR (@933KJR) January 12, 2024
It’s possible that DeBoer knows his name is associated with the Alabama job and he doesn’t want to answer questions about it and be a distraction towards his own program.
However, if DeBoer was imminently going to be hired by Alabama today, this is also how this situation would likely be handled.
Another interesting wrinkle is that if DeBoer had NFL aspirations, the job in Seattle with the Seahawks just came open following the retirement of Pete Carroll.

DeBoer has the coaching chops to coach in the NFL and the offensive mind that pro teams would covet.
He could also simply choose to stay at Washington in a place where he made a national championship appearance in just his second year there.
Whether or not DeBoer is Alabama’s next head coach, he will not be short of options over the next couple of days.
