After 82.6% of voters chose another candidate in Tuesday’s special GOP primary election for Alabama’s Second Congressional District, David Matthews issued a “threat” against the Republican Party and brought into question whether he is reneging on a previous pledge to back the Republican nominee following his blowout loss.

The failed candidate’s comments came after his father, local Ozark attorney Will Matthews, on Facebook seemingly encouraged support for Democrat Congressman Shomari Figures in the November general election.

The elder Matthews liked a Facebook comment Wednesday stating, “I voted for David yesterday and I’ll be voting for Shomari Figures in November. I met Shomari in Montgomery about a year ago and had a long conversation with him. He’s a very smart and impressive young man.”

Figures served in the Obama administration as a field organizer for his 2012 re-election campaign, in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, and as the Department of Justice White House Liaison. Later, Figures served on the Biden-Harris transition team and then in the Biden-Harris administration as deputy chief of staff and counselor to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

In a Facebook video posted Thursday, David Matthews said, “I laughed myself to sleep on election night.”

“What I was laughing about about the world may never know,” he added. “I’ll say if the Republican Party loses this general election for the congressional seat, then we’ll know. I would say if that happens, I am going to take a concerted effort on dismantling the Republican establishment in our state. So we better win. That is a threat. It’s not a warning.”

Matthews ended his primary campaign by stating he did not want the endorsement of President Donald J. Trump.

Figures is considered one of the most liberal members of Congress, with strong financial backing from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
