State Rep. Danny Garrett (R-Trussville) has added yet another leadership position to his belt, further cementing his status as a rising star in Alabama politics.
House Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) on Wednesday announced that Garrett will serve as House majority whip during the 2018-2022 quadrennium and hold the third highest position in the House Republican Caucus’ leadership structure.
Whips are tasked with conducting vote counts on major issues and legislation and with relaying members’ thoughts and concerns to the House leadership.
“In order to be effective, a majority whip must possess three important qualities – exceptional organizational abilities, strong leadership skills, and the complete trust and confidence of their fellow Caucus members,” Ledbetter explained in a press release. “Danny Garrett defines each of these qualities, and we are grateful for his willingness to serve in this role as Republicans continue our effort to fundamentally reform how state government in Montgomery operates.”
Garrett said he looks forward to filling his important new position and pledged to work hard in helping carry out the House Republicans’ conservative, pro-growth agenda.
“When debate heats up and the action on the House floor is intense, it is important to always know the vote counts on the important issues of the day, and I stand ready to carry out that mission,” Garrett outlined.
He added, “I am eager to serve as the Caucus members’ voice to the House leadership and, in return, the leadership’s voice to the Caucus members.”
This comes after the announcement Monday that Garrett would be serving as vice chair for two key House committees: Ways and Means Education and Education Policy.
Elected to the Alabama House in 2014, Garrett represents District 44, which includes the Trussville, Clay and Pinson areas of Jefferson County.
For more than 30 years, Garrett has carried out a successful career in the steel, rail and bus manufacturing industries and has served as chief financial officer for two public corporations and a family-owned business.
He is a former vice president of the Trussville City Schools Board of Education; a former board member of Independence Place, a faith-based organization meeting the social and recreational needs of young adults with exceptional needs; and served on the board of visitors for the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce.
