COVID-19 vaccines 100% covered under Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama plans

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has announced it is providing 100% coverage for the administration of COVID-19 vaccines throughout the government’s phased-in vaccine distribution process.

In a release, Blue Cross also underlined that the insurance company is recommending the vaccine for those currently eligible. Blue Cross members on individual, Medicare and almost all employer health plans will be able to receive an FDA-authorized coronavirus vaccine without having to pay any out-of-pocket expenses, the company advised.

“The health and wellness of our members and communities remains our top priority,” stated Tim Vines, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. “We want to make sure our members have access to the COVID-19 vaccines without cost being an obstacle.”

The company’s release also stressed that while a safe COVID-19 vaccine is available, following current preventive measures is still essential, such as wearing face masks, social distancing and washing hands frequently.

“The FDA-authorized vaccines for COVID-19 show we are headed in the right direction in defeating the virus,” said Dr. Dow Briggs, executive vice president of BCBS of Alabama. “To ensure our members and Alabamians get the most appropriate care, we encourage them to consult their doctor or pharmacy if they have any questions about the vaccines.”

This continues the company’s consistent commitment throughout the pandemic to supporting Alabamians in extra ways. For example, BCBS of Alabama announced a premium discount totaling $80 million in November. This came in addition to the more than $230 million in support the company had already provided its members, providers and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
