A single act by strangers changed the future of an Alabama family Sunday night, when a young couple pulled a 7-month-old child from the back of a burning car after a deadly crash in Morgan County.

According to WAFF, the incident began when Kayleigh Page, 29, left the roadway on Alabama 157 and struck two trees. Page did not survive the crash, but the baby, LJ, in the back seat did — only because Zoie Campbell, 21, and her boyfriend, Samuel Brooks, 25, acted before emergency crews arrived.

Morgan County Sheriff Ron Puckett said deputies reached the scene to find the child already removed from the burning Tesla.

He credited the couple with saving the baby’s life and highlighted the impact the act will have on the child’s family: “You saved a child. That will make a difference to the rest of the family and to really certainly, to the father.”

First responders noted just how dangerous the situation was. Electric vehicle fires burn at extreme temperatures and release intense gases, making them far more hazardous than typical car fires.

Decatur Fire and Rescue’s Brandon Sivley described EV fire behavior as “normal fire, you know, times 100.” Despite those dangers, the couple stepped in — something Sivley described as an act of remarkable bravery.

Puckett also expressed appreciation for their actions, saying, “Thank you for what you did.” He encouraged the public to also help others when it is safe to do so.

The night of the crash was only the couple’s second date. They spent their third date continuing to help the family — collecting breast milk donations for the infant.

Officials reported that baby LJ was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover.
