The search for the next superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools has drawn significant attention from the community, particularly regarding the lack of transparency in the selection process. Due to the issue, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce recently withdrew its sponsorship of planned superintendent candidate receptions, citing concerns about how the process was conducted. While some civic and elected leaders called for a broader search and additional engagement, the Montgomery County Board of Education moved ahead and named two finalists, prompting ongoing public discussion about the decision-making approach.

This week, the two finalists, Dr. Zickeyous Byrd and Dr. Harold Wright, participated in public town hall meetings as part of the final phase of the selection process. The events offered each candidate an opportunity to outline their vision for the district and respond to community questions. Each session was open to the public and included a 15-minute presentation followed by 45 minutes of audience Q&A.
Dr. Byrd, former superintendent of Selma City Schools, emphasized his familiarity with the Montgomery community and expressed a desire to build strong, collaborative relationships. His presentation focused on increasing transparency through tools like public dashboards and advisory councils and raising academic achievement through expanded early literacy and math programs. He also addressed current proficiency data in the district and proposed using quarterly benchmark assessments to track student progress.
Dr. Wright, currently serving as Deputy Superintendent in Crowley Independent School District in Texas, presented a leadership approach rooted in collaboration and equity. He emphasized creating a pipeline for student success that begins early and continues through graduation, aiming to meet students’ individual needs along the way. He also addressed national discussions around federal education funding, particularly in special education, and expressed his intent to advocate for resources that support all learners. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of a unified leadership team in fostering a positive and effective school culture.
After conducting interviews and evaluations, the Board selected Dr. Byrd and Dr. Wright as the two finalists. The decision on who will become the next superintendent is expected to be announced on April 8.
