Community comes together to renovate Prattville veteran’s ‘dilapidated’ home

As reported by WSFA, a group of good Samaritans is going above and beyond in their efforts to fix-up the “dilapidated” home of one Alabama veteran in Prattville.

The outlet wrote, “U.S. Army veteran Ben Alexander has been living in poor conditions as his home has fallen down, but not for much longer.”

With Veterans Day upon us, Habitat for Humanity of Chilton and Autauga Counties have been hard at work improving Alexander’s house, as they strive to give this patriot a truly home-sweet-home in Alabama once again.

The first step started months ago with an effort to repair Alexander’s roof. This much-needed work was provided by Montgomery-based Capitol City Roofing as part of the Owens Corning national “Roof Deployment Project,” a nationwide project to show appreciation for veterans.

“This new roof lifts a huge burden off Mr. Alexander’s shoulders,” Habitat’s Executive Director, Lisa Green, explained. “The Roof Deployment Project brings together so many great organizations like Capitol City Roofing to make a big impact right here in Prattville.”

As crews got to work above his house, they quickly discovered Alexander had more urgent needs throughout the structure. He was even using a wood burning stove for heat.

The work these selfless Alabamians have done since is extraordinary. Not only is the roof fixed, now Alexander is getting new heating, vinyl siding and even fresh kitchen appliances.

“This is as special as a new home for us,” Green emphasized. “We’re just really proud of what we have accomplished both inside and outside.”

Denser Alexander, the veteran’s sister, expressed the family’s appreciation.

“We’re just really happy with what they have accomplished. It’s almost like a new home,” Denser said. “To get things restored, because it was in such a dilapidated [state]…that’s about the best word I could use to describe it.”
