The race to determine Centreville’s next mayor remains undecided after unofficial results showed a tie between incumbent Mayor Mike Oakley and challenger Barry Cooner.

Both candidates received 326 votes in Tuesday’s municipal election.

The only ballots not yet counted are provisional ballots, which must be reviewed and qualified by the Bibb County Board of Registrars. The results will be certified on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

If the certified results confirm the tie, Centreville voters will head back to the polls for a runoff election on September 23, 2025.

State law also outlines what happens if a runoff election ends in a tie. Under the law, the city’s governing body must first attempt to break the tie by majority vote.

If the council cannot reach a decision, the tie is then broken “by lot,” such as a coin toss or drawing straws, conducted by the county’s probate judge.
