After years of planning and construction, the long-awaited Coca-Cola Amphitheater in Birmingham’s Druid Hills neighborhood is set to open its gates Sunday, with a full slate of concerts, comedy shows, and cultural events on deck.
The $46 million venue, built on the former Carraway Hospital site as part of the Star Uptown redevelopment project, has a capacity of 9,380 and promises to host some of the biggest names in entertainment in its inaugural year. The first performer to take the stage will be comedian Matt Rife, followed by chart-topping artists like Dave Matthews Band, Def Leppard, and Rod Stewart.

A joint venture between the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC), the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, and Live Nation, the amphitheater is expected to attract over 220,000 visitors annually with its robust event schedule.
Druid Hills residents say they’ve been pleased with how developers have engaged the community and addressed concerns about parking, pedestrian safety, and noise. Plans include shuttle service from the Uptown Entertainment District and future nearby parking decks. A free trolley will also ferry guests from area hotels and restaurants to the venue.
Jay Wilson of Live Nation called the transformation of the old Carraway Hospital site symbolic.
“It used to be the state’s No. 1 trauma center,” he said. “Now it’s going to be the state’s No. 1 place to rock and roll.”
