The Auburn Tigers made a big move on Saturday afternoon at halftime of their victory against Arkansas, turning away from Jackson Arnold and throwing fellow transfer addition Ashton Daniels out to play quarterback in the second half.
Arnold, who has struggled all season long to get on the same page as his wide receiver group, threw a brutal pick six to end the half and put the Tigers down by two scores headed into the break in Fayetteville.
Though Daniels didn’t exactly light the world on fire as the offense could only muster field goals in the second half, he did manage the game nicely and allow the defense — who had three second half interceptions — to effectively win the game to bring Auburn its first SEC win.
Now, Hugh Freeze has a decision to make this week with a great chance for another win, this time at home against Kentucky. The head coach is not giving his starter away though, and it seems practice this week will decide it naturally.
“I don’t think there’s any greater motivator than competition,” Freeze said. “That’s what it is, it’s an open competition to see who prepares and plays the best, they both will split reps and then we’ll make a decision….it’ll be exciting to see how they both respond and compete this week as we head into this game.”
Freeze went on to praise both quarterbacks, saying how impressed he was with the poise Daniels showed to come intp the game and move the ball as well as saying how well Arnold was playing prior to the interception.
It sounds though like fans may have to wait to find out who will be starting for their team this week, and it would not be a surprise at this point to once again see both quarterbacks in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night.
