The biggest College Football Playoff game is happening on Friday night and it’s expected to bring in millions to OU’s college town.
The Alabama Crimson Tide is taking on the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, in what will be OU’s first home playoff game ever.
With the field expanding to 12 teams in 2024, the first round games are now played on campus, adding an extra jolt of electricity into the postseason. It also allows schools and college towns to financially benefit from an extra home game.
With two brands the size of Oklahoma and Alabama, the economic impact on Norman is going to be massive.
According to a story from The Norman Transcript, which pulled data from the Cleveland County Economic Development Coalition, the city is going to see anywhere between $37 million and $117 million in economic impact just from the playoff game alone.
“We have been working really hard to try to drive people from out of town who may not know about Norman, or this may be their first visit,” Norman Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Scott Martin said. “We love our national chains. They’re great. We’re glad to have them in Norman, but if you’re coming from somewhere else, you probably already have that, and you want to try to experience the local flavor.”
Dan Schemm, president and CEO of Visit Norman talked about the impact that visiting fans from Alabama are going to have on the city.
“It’s a short turnaround, a quick turnaround, but we’re always, always ready for things like this, and thrilled that we get to try and make this as big a deal as possible,” he began. “This is going to be awesome, and we know people are going to come in early. They’re going to spend a lot of money…[Local businesses are] going to staff up and stock up and be ready to have whatever you need as you’re shopping for your OU playoff experience.”
For those not making the trip out to Sooner country, the game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. CST Friday night on ABC and ESPN.
