Calera Police warn TikTok door-knocking challenge could have deadly consequences

A recent TikTok challenge is raising concerns for the Calera Police Department. The law enforcement agency released a post on social media earlier this week asking for help identifying two suspects believed to have participated in a viral door-knocking challenge.

The challenge involves individuals kicking, knocking, or banging on random doors to capture the reactions of homeowners, often late at night when residents are not expecting visitors. WIAT reported that Calera police initially believed the two suspects in a recent Camden Cove incident were attempting a burglary, but later determined they may have been participating in a social media prank.

Police are warning that the prank could have deadly consequences if homeowners feel threatened. In Alabama, the Stand Your Ground law allows residents to use deadly force if they believe they or their families are in imminent danger.

Calera police have stated that those caught participating in the challenge could face criminal charges, including breaking and entering an occupied residence. The department indicated that it intends to pursue prosecution for anyone found to be taking part in similar incidents.

Homeowners who experience an incident like this are advised to document what happened, including saving video footage from security cameras or making detailed notes about the time, date, and any identifying information. Reporting the incident to local law enforcement is also recommended, particularly if property damage occurred or there is concern for safety.

Residents are also encouraged to review their homeowner’s insurance policies to confirm what damage may be covered.

To help prevent future incidents, homeowners can consider implementing additional safety measures such as installing or upgrading smart doorbell cameras, adding motion-sensor lighting, and reinforcing entry points to make doors more secure.

The Calera Police Department continues to investigate the Camden Cove incident and urges anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.
