Former Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl added his two cents to a wild story that came out about the current financial state of Rutgers University Athletics.
A report from Keith Sargeant of NJ.com revealed Rutgers University — who competes in the Big 10 out of Piscataway, New Jersey — operated at a $78 million deficit in 2025.
Outkick‘s Clay Travis added commentary on the matter, explaining Rutgers has lost an absurd $516.9 million since joining the Big 10 back in 2014.
According to Pearl, operating at this kind of loss is “not sustainable.”
In all likelihood, Rutgers is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of schools’ athletics departments operating at a loss, and this has obviously only become worse throughout the era of Name, Image and Likeness.
As revenue sharing makes its way towards this current wild time of college sports, further losses from departments are likely, and as has been warned time and time again, will put non revenue-generating sports in serious jeopardy.
Pearl has long been an advocate for student athletes, and now that he’s retired, perhaps he can be part of the eventual solution that brings some calm to the chaos that has defined the last decade of collegiate athletics.
