Broilin’ in Bama: Heat index could reach 110 degrees this week

High levels of heat and humidity in the summer time are nothing new to Alabamians.

This week, however, could bring dangerously high temperatures throughout much of the state.

Weather outlets are forecasting temperatures for this week throughout the state to be at least in the upper 90s with a possible heat index of 105-110 degrees, depending on the region.

Birmingham meteorologist James Spann discussed the heatwave.

“We are in the midst of the hottest week of the year for Alabama and the Deep South,” Spann said.

Spann said today’s temperatures alone could range anywhere from 96 to 101 degrees and heat advisories have been issued for most of the state.

According to Spann, the vast majority of Alabama this week has the potential to have a heat index of 105. In the southern-most portion of the Yellowhammer State, it could be even hotter with a possible heat index of 110 degrees.

Unfortunately, he did say that more than likely there will not be any let up in the heat for the remainder of the week.

He did deliver some good news on when the heat may break.

“We are going to get some good heat relief next week as highs go back into the 80s,” Spann said.

The Huntsville branch of the National Weather Service posted a notice about the high temperatures on social media.

Alabama’s hottest temperature on record was 112 degrees on Sept. 5, 1925 in Centreville (Bibb County).
