U.S. Sen. Katie Britt says U.S. Rep. Max Miller should resign from Congress and abandon his reelection campaign as the Ohio Republican faces allegations of domestic abuse and a House Ethics Committee investigation.
Britt (R-Montgomery) told Semafor that she had reviewed statements from Miller and U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, whose daughter, Emily Moreno, was previously married to Miller.
“Yes,” Britt said when asked whether Miller should resign and end his reelection campaign.
“Look, this is a family matter. I don’t know all the details,” Britt said. “But I stand with Bernie in supporting his daughter and his granddaughter, and hope that others will as well.”
Bernie Moreno publicly called on his former son-in-law to leave Congress after months of avoiding detailed comments about the divorce and custody dispute involving his daughter.
“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them,” Moreno said. “He should not serve in the House of Representatives.”
Moreno also said he believes Miller poses a danger to his daughter and expressed concern for his granddaughter while she is in Miller’s custody.
Emily Moreno has accused Miller of physically abusing and threatening her during their marriage. Miller has denied the allegations and said no court or government agency has substantiated an abuse claim against him.
“I’m not dropping out of this race, and I’ll win in November,” Miller said during a livestream defending himself.
The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday that it had opened an investigation into whether Miller may have engaged in domestic violence, abuse or illegal drug use.
Miller had also requested an Ethics Committee review, saying he wanted to clear his name and had “absolutely nothing to hide.”
The second-term congressman later reiterated that he would remain in the race even if President Donald Trump asked him to withdraw.
Republicans face a limited window to replace Miller on the November ballot. Party officials have expressed concern that the controversy could place his northeast Ohio district at risk as Republicans seek to retain their House majority.
Britt joins several Republican senators who have publicly supported Moreno or called on Miller to step aside.
