Brasfield & Gorrie expands Birmingham headquarters with $18.9 million project, adds dozens of new jobs

Brasfield & Gorrie is deepening its roots in Birmingham with the completion of a three-story, 28,500-square-foot expansion to its headquarters in the city’s Lakeview District.

The $18.9 million investment is part of the company’s long-term strategic plan and reflects a continued commitment to its hometown, where it was founded in 1964. Since that time, they have become known for building and managing construction projects “beyond expectations.”

The new space, situated adjacent to the existing headquarters, is already having a positive economic impact. The project has supported the creation of 64 new jobs in Birmingham, and the company is on track to exceed its goal of adding 85 headquarters positions within five years, with 75% of those roles already filled.

“I’m energized by the company’s growth, and we’re collectively committed to Birmingham, where we’ve been based since our beginning in 1964,” said CEO Rob Blalock.

“We’re invested in the communities that support our 13 offices across eight states, and it’s important to us to continue to show that commitment in our hometown.”

The expansion was made possible through support from the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, and the State of Alabama. State officials say the project underscores how homegrown businesses can drive both local and national progress.

“Brasfield & Gorrie’s continued growth in Birmingham is a great example of how Alabama-based companies can lead nationally while staying deeply rooted in their hometowns,” said Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.

“This expansion not only reflects the company’s long-term vision and investment in its people—it also strengthens Birmingham’s position as a hub for talent, innovation, and opportunity in the construction industry.”

Construction of the new space was led by Pylon Building Group, a subsidiary of Brasfield & Gorrie, launched in 2023. The project served as a milestone for the young firm.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work on this important project for Brasfield & Gorrie,” said Pylon President Reggie Torbor. “As we continue to grow and move toward establishing ourselves as an independent company, our team is honing our skills. Building on an active campus for a knowledgeable client has been an invaluable experience, and we’re excited about the path ahead for our company.”

Brasfield & Gorrie now employs approximately 1,400 people at its Birmingham headquarters and over 4,100 nationwide. In 2024, the company reported $6.4 billion in revenue and earned a spot as the 22nd largest contractor on Engineering News-Record’s Top 400 list.

The firm’s footprint extends across eight states and includes a broad portfolio of projects throughout Alabama, such as Southern Research’s new biotech center and campus renovations, additions to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Protective Stadium, multiple Airbus facilities, and facilities for HudsonAlpha Discovery Life Sciences and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

In addition to expanding its physical footprint, Brasfield & Gorrie has bolstered its workforce development efforts. The company recently opened a 9,650-square-foot Field Training Center near Irondale in Birmingham. Built by Pylon, the facility offers accredited training programs and NCCER certifications to employees seeking to grow their skills, regardless of previous experience.
